Berlin has recalled its ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer, for consultations. The decision, made by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadepoel, is intended to determine how to proceed, the ministry announced.

The European Court of Human Rights awarded Ruslan Rakhaev, former deputy head of the criminal investigation department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Cherkessk, compensation in the amount of 8,500 euros. The conditions of his transfer to the colony were considered inhumane, the human rights organization Public Verdict reported.
In the summer of 2018, the former deputy head of the criminal investigation department of Cherkessk Rakhaev was sentenced to nine years in a maximum security colony. He was accused of the death of detainee Dakhir Dzhakezov. The accusation against the policeman was based entirely on the testimony of the operatives who illegally detained Dzhankezov and kept him in the police stronghold all night. According to lawyers, the police specifically accused Rakhaev of their crime in order to evade responsibility.
“Public Verdict” appealed to the ECHR with a complaint about the violation of the right to a fair trial and the inhumane conditions in which Rakhaev was taken to the colony. As a result, the ECHR recognized that the Russian authorities violated Articles 3 and 13 of the European Convention on Human Rights in relation to Rakhaev. They must pay the victim 8,500 euros.
