The ECHR awarded compensation to a Ukrainian citizen who was tortured in a pre-trial detention center in Vladikavkaz

The European Court ordered the Russian authorities to pay 30 thousand euros as compensation for moral damage to 59-year-old Ukrainian citizen Nikolai Karpyuk. Previously, he was found guilty of allegedly fighting against Russia in the first war in Chechnya.

Karpyuk was detained in 2014 and kept in temporary detention center No. 1 in Vladikavkaz. They tortured him with electric shocks, threatening to kidnap and torture his child and wife. As a result, the man testified that he fought against Russian troops in the first Russian-Chechen war.

In 2016, a court in Chechnya sentenced a Ukrainian to 22.5 years in prison. In 2019, he was released as part of a prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine.
