The Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) expressed concern at its meeting in Tallinn about the systematic suppression of dissent in Azerbaijan.
EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos emphasized that the Armenian people alone have the right to determine their future, and Brussels is ready to support their aspirations towards European integration. According to her, recent events, namely the meeting of the European Political Community and the EU-Armenia summit, have demonstrated the path the Armenian people want to take.
At the same time, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan today recalled that Armenia is a member of the EAEU and continues its activities within the union.
"We are a member of the EAEU; no one has told us: 'Leave tomorrow.' It is also no secret that the Armenian people have European aspirations. When the time comes to make a decision, we will make it," Mirzoyan said.
On May 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed Moscow's willingness not to impede decisions that will be favorable to the Armenian people. He also noted that Armenia's plans to join the EU require careful consideration, given its existing economic ties and the benefits of membership in the EAEU, and suggested that Yerevan put the issue to a referendum.
On March 26, 2025, the Armenian parliament approved legislation initiating the country's accession to the European Union. On December 2, 2025, the EU-Armenia strategic partnership program was approved in Brussels.
On May 4, 2026, the European Political Community Summit was held in Yerevan, bringing together representatives of EU countries, other European states, and international organizations. The meeting focused on the theme "Building the Future: Unity and Stability in Europe."
