Opposition figure Gulu Mammadli stated that the arrest of Ali Karimli, leader of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was expected, but the reasons go beyond simple criticism of the authorities. According to Mammadli, Karimli's publications in major Western media have increased his political significance and visibility abroad, which has caused concern among the Azerbaijani authorities.
The Secretary General of the "Dream" said that his party has brought Georgia closer to Europe more than others
The Secretary General of the "Georgian Dream" party Kakha Kaladze said that the authorities of his country have not deviated from the European path. According to him, the ruling party is the force that "brought our country closer to Europe more than anyone else."
"All steps forward on the path to European integration are connected with the period of the Georgian Dream's rule. It is clear that we want Europe. But this does not give anyone the right to carry out narrow political instrumentalization, to use blackmail as a weapon against our country," Kaladze said.
He emphasized that the "Dream" will not allow unrest, war, or the sale of Georgia's interests "either through attempts by internal forces or under the dictation of external ones."
Today, the international human rights organization HRW (Human Rights Watch) published a report and demanded that the Georgian authorities immediately and effectively investigate and punish those responsible for the brutal police violence against protesters.
“In a wide-ranging and clearly punitive crackdown, security forces harassed, brutally detained and beat protesters. Police also subjected them to torture and other ill-treatment in vans and police stations,” the NGO said.
HRW Director Hugh Williamson said the Georgian government should release all those detained for exercising their right to peaceful assembly.
