Georgians have become much more likely to seek asylum in Europe

The number of applications by Georgian citizens for international protection to the EU has increased by 81% compared to 2021. According to the European Commission report, a total of 26,450 such applications were submitted. Only 7% of them were approved in the EU, which is 2% more than a year earlier.

In addition, the number of cases of illegal stay of Georgian citizens in EU countries increased by 87%: 21,910 people in 2022 and 11,695 in 2021. At the same time, 25 cases of Georgians illegally crossing the borders of EU member states were recorded. The number of refusals to Georgian citizens to enter the EU increased by 31%: 3,970 refusals in 2022 and 3,030 in 2021.
