Foreign doctors allowed to see Mikheil Saakashvili

Polish doctors arrived at a private clinic where ex-president of Georgia, political prisoner Mikheil Saakashvili is being treated. “The patient's condition is stable, our colleagues will see him, and then we will talk with you,” said Zurab Chkhaidze, director of the clinic.

At the beginning of March, Saakashvili's lawyers started talking about the plans of Polish doctors to visit Saakashvili. The family of the ex-president and his supporters claimed that the entry of doctors was delayed due to bureaucratic difficulties and obstruction by the Georgian authorities.

Earlier, former US ambassadors warned the Georgian authorities that mistreatment of Saakashvili could "distance Georgia from the West" and that if he died in prison, "sanctions could be tougher or more likely."

On July 3, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky instructed the Foreign Ministry to protest to the Georgian ambassador and offer to leave the country. He, like many others, was outraged by the appearance of Mikheil Saakashvili in the clinic - he was exhausted as a result of a long hunger strike.
