Timur Yalkabov, a Crimean Tatar political prisoner serving a 17-year sentence in Murmansk Correctional Colony No. 17, has experienced a sharp deterioration in his health. According to his wife, Aliye Yalkabova, the 45-year-old man has been diagnosed with hepatitis.
Timur Yalkabov also suffers from chronic asthma and has a disability. He was transferred to the Murmansk penal colony in April 2025. Prior to his conviction, Timur and his wife earned a living by baking and selling confectionery.
On March 22, 2022, the Southern District Military Court sentenced Timur Yalkabov to 17 years in prison. He was charged with membership in the Islamic party Hizb ut-Tahrir, designated a terrorist organization in the Russian Federation but operating freely in Ukraine and Europe.
According to the case materials, the accused did not possess weapons, did not plan to commit a terrorist attack, and did not incite others to commit terrorism. The defense and Yalkabov himself called the trial fabricated and linked it to his public criticism of security forces for repression against other Crimean Tatars.
