Crimean Tatar political prisoner held in prison longer than expected

The court in Crimea refused to count the time Rustem Emiruseinov was kept in a pre-trial detention center against the period of his stay in prison. He has been in prison in the city of Balashov, Saratov region, for more than a year, which contradicts the length of his sentence.

“The logic of the FSIN representatives was very entertaining. They interpret the verdict of the Southern District Military Court in their own way. It is believed that the time spent in a pre-trial detention center before the sentence enters into legal force should be counted towards the total sentence in a maximum security colony. In response to my surprise that the prison is not a resort, but a place for serving a sentence, nothing was said,” said lawyer Lilya Gemedzhi.

The Southern District Military Court sentenced Rustem Emiruseinov to 17 years in prison. He was accused of belonging to the Islamic party Hizb-ut-Tahrir, banned in Russia. In Ukraine and many other countries of the world, the organization operates without restrictions at the level of national legislation.
