A Crimean Tatar Muslim may be released from the colony due to lack of eyesight

Alexander Syzykov, a Muslim sentenced to 17 years in Crimea, can be released from the Minusinsk prison in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. He has a visual disability of the 1st group. The corresponding appeal to the court was filed by the FSIN.

In March, Syzykov was examined at the Krasnoyarsk Tuberculosis Hospital No. 1. Due to complete blindness and hypertension, the hospital recommended releasing the prisoner.

After the Crimean man's arrest, lawyers sought his examination and release. However, the requests were unsuccessful. Alexander Syzykov was found guilty of ties to the Islamic political party Hizb ut-Tahrir, banned in the Russian Federation. He has been in a pre-trial detention center and under house arrest since July 2020. In May 2023, the Southern District Military Court sentenced him to 17 years in a strict regime colony. According to human rights activists, Hizb ut-Tahrir members are not being prosecuted for preparing a coup d'état and terrorism, but for criticizing the Russian authorities.
