Crimean Tatar political prisoner released due to cancer diagnosis

Lenur Khalilov, convicted in the case of the "Alushta group" of the Islamic party "Hizb ut-Tahrir" and former chairman of the Muslim community "Alushta", was released from serving his sentence due to his serious health condition.

The man was diagnosed with cancer, after which he was transferred to IK-1 in the Arkhangelsk region and soon placed in a prison hospital. The Isakogorsky District Court of Arkhangelsk decided to release Khalilov, based on the fact that he has a disease from the list of diseases that prevent him from being in prison.

Lenur Khalilov, Ruslan Mesutov, Ruslan Nagaev and Eldar Kantimirov were detained in Alushta in 2019 after a series of searches. In 2021, the Southern District Military Court found them guilty of organizing and participating in the activities of a terrorist organization, as well as preparing for the violent overthrow of the government based on their participation in the Hizb ut-Tahrir party, which is banned in the Russian Federation. Khalilov was sentenced to 18 years in a maximum security penal colony.
