The Crimean Tatar human rights defender has been held in a detention center for more than a month
Crimean Tatar human rights defender Riza Izetov has been held in the detention center IK-1 of Yakutia for more than a month. He was sentenced to 19 years in prison.
 
In the fall of 2024, the human rights defender was taken to a colony located nine thousand kilometers from his home in Crimea. The man's mother cannot visit him because of cancer. She filed a lawsuit in court demanding that her son be moved closer to home.
 
In 2022, Riza Izetov and other Crimean Tatars received long terms. Depending on the role, they are found guilty under part 1 or 2 tbsp. 205.5 (organization of activities of a terrorist organization or participation in it) and ch. 1 Art. 30th century 278 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (preparation for a violent seizure of power).
 
According to the investigation, Izetov and others in the territory of Simferopol and the Simferopol region organized the activities of a cell of the terrorist organization Hizb ut-Tahrir, banned in the Russian Federation. It operates legally in other countries of the world. Human rights activists note that the members of the organization are sentenced to real terms on the basis that they met in apartments, read religious literature and recruited new members.
