Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry Summons Russian Ambassador Over Threats and Calls for Violence in Russian Media

Mikhail Evdokimov, Russia’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan, was summoned to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry following a series of high-profile statements made within the Russian media landscape. Baku stated that these remarks contained insults and threats directed at the country, its citizens, and its leadership.

According to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, the Russian diplomat was informed of the Azerbaijani side's "serious concern and strong protest."

The Ministry specifically highlighted several incidents. In particular, it cited remarks made on August 13 during the broadcast of the program "Chistota Ponimaniya" (Purity of Understanding). The Azerbaijani side also drew attention to a statement made on the Sputnik radio station on August 7 regarding the alleged inclusion of Azerbaijan's leadership in Russia's "list of terrorists and extremists."

Furthermore, Baku pointed to the recurrence of insulting and—in the Ministry's view—provocative material concerning the country's leadership, appearing on YouTube on August 9 and on the "Spas" TV channel on August 16.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry expressed particular dissatisfaction regarding discussions about potential interference in the country's internal affairs and calls for physical violence. The Ministry stated that such rhetoric is "absolutely unacceptable."

Baku emphasized that it had repeatedly called on the Russian side to halt such publications and statements, and that the issue had been discussed at various political levels. However, according to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, this rhetoric has not only persisted but has intensified.

The Russian ambassador was once again presented with a demand to take "urgent and effective measures" to put a stop to threats, calls for violence, and provocative statements regarding Azerbaijan within the Russian media space. Earlier that day, the Press Council of Azerbaijan strongly condemned offensive material and threats directed at the country, its people, and its leadership in Russian media. The organization stated that such rhetoric has become systematic and runs counter to both journalistic ethics and the spirit of relations between the two nations.

The Council called on the Russian media community to address the situation and reminded them of the liability associated with such statements.

The day before, the Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan placed three Russian citizens—journalist Ivan Knyazev, political consultant Semyon Uralov, and TV journalist Alexey Chadayev—on the international wanted list. According to Azerbaijani investigators, they had publicly called for the violent overthrow of the constitutional order, the violation of the country's territorial integrity, the incitement of ethnic hatred, and acts of terrorism.
