Mikheil Saakashvili may be returned to prison

The condition of the convicted ex-President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili has improved sharply, and he will be transferred from a civilian clinic to prison based on the decision and recommendation of doctors. This was announced by the head of the country's Ministry of Justice, Rati Bregadze.

“I confirm the conclusions about improved health. We are happy about this, and when there is an appropriate decision and recommendation from doctors, he will be transferred to a penitentiary institution,” Bregadze said.

Since his arrest on October 1, 2021, Mikheil Saakashvili has spent a total of less than six months in a prison cell. The rest of the time, due to hunger strike and exhaustion, he was in clinics: first in a prison, then in a military hospital, and from May 2022 in the Vivamedi clinic. The politician was convicted in the cases of the murder of banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of deputy Valery Gelashvili. In the first case, Saakashvili was sentenced to three years in prison, in the second - to six. In addition, he is involved in the cases of the dispersal of the opposition rally on November 7, 2007, the pogrom at the Imedi television company and the embezzlement of funds from the state budget - these are still being considered by the courts.
