NIYSO: Imam in Ingushetia taken away after search; previously pressured to cooperate

Today, Idris Tumgoev, imam of the Akhli Sunnah mosque, was taken away from his home in the Ingush village of Surkhakhi. Law enforcement conducted a search of his home. He was then taken to an unknown location, according to the opposition Chechen channel NIYSO. The reasons for his detention are also unknown.

According to NIYSO sources, security forces previously attempted to pressure Idris Tumgoev into cooperation by holding repeated conversations with him.

Idris Tumgoev is a respected preacher in Ingushetia, having received a degree in Sharia law (Islamic jurisprudence) from the Islamic University of Medina.

"Systematic disappearances of clergy who disagree with government policies continue in Ingushetia. "Previously, there were reports of the detentions of Abdur-Rashid Gardanov, Muhammad Tamaskhanov, Muhammad Sultygov, Nazir Dzeitov, and other religious figures," NIYSO noted.

According to the channel, physical violence and psychological pressure were used against those detained.
