A Dagestani official accused of corruption ends his hunger strike

Ullubiy Khanmurzayev, the former head of Dagestan's Buinaksk district and accused of fraud, has ended his week-long hunger strike in a Makhachkala pretrial detention center. Investigators reportedly suspect him of organizing the fictitious employment of his common-law wife, who lives in Dubai, as a teacher-psychologist at two local schools.

According to investigators, approximately half a million rubles were illegally transferred to the official's wife between 2023 and 2024. After the criminal case was opened, Khanmurzayev announced his desire to serve in the "SVO." He cited his duty to his homeland and the call of the President of the country and the Head of Dagestan as the reasons for his decision. He noted that, while working in the municipality and meeting daily with war veterans, he felt a need to be with them.

Khanmurzaev returned from the "special operation" in May 2025 and was arrested in January 2026 at the Makhachkala airport. Nothing has been reported about his exploits in the "SVO."

World Press Freedom Index 2026: Things Have Worse in the South Caucasus and Russia
30 April 2026

The 2026 World Press Freedom Index, published this morning by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), records the worst deterioration in global media freedom in 25 years. More than half of the world's countries rank the situation as "challenging" or "very challenging," and the average index level has never been lower. A key trend is increasing legal pressure on the media: of the five indicators used to assess press freedom worldwide (economy, law, security, politics, culture, and society), the "law" indicator showed the most significant decline.
