Convicted member of Basayev's unit wants to increase the term
The Supreme Court of Dagestan, at the request of the prosecutor's office, sent the criminal case against Alexander Umantsev to the Novolaksky District Court for a new trial. In 2006, he was sentenced to 19 and a half years on charges of invading the republic as part of the units of field commander Shamil Basayev.

According to the investigation, in July 1999, Umantsev joined the unit led by field commander Shamil Basayev and Khattab and participated in the invasion of Dagestan during the Russian-Chechen war. On September 5, he and other participants ambushed officers of the Novolaksky District Department of Internal Affairs in Dagestan, the investigation claims. Three police officers were killed.

The prosecutor's office considered that 19.5 years in a maximum security penal colony was too lenient a sentence, and now the court will review the case anew. In addition, in 2014, the Supreme Court of Chechnya sentenced Umantsev to another 17 years in the case of an attack on security forces.
