Opposition figure Gulu Mammadli stated that the arrest of Ali Karimli, leader of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was expected, but the reasons go beyond simple criticism of the authorities. According to Mammadli, Karimli's publications in major Western media have increased his political significance and visibility abroad, which has caused concern among the Azerbaijani authorities.
The collective security treaty, according to Yerevan, was not implemented in relation to Armenia. The country suspended participation in it. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this in an interview with France24.
Pashinyan also said that several months ago Russia “openly called on the Armenian population to overthrow the government in Yerevan.” According to him, “this propaganda from Moscow” against him continues unabated. The politician also stressed that Russian border guards will be removed from Yerevan airport.
In response to Pashinyan’s words, Russian Ambassador to Armenia Kopyrkin said that the diversification of Yerevan’s policy “is involuntarily perceived as largely distancing itself from Russia.” He expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that the Armenian leadership does not comment on the statements of the Americans, who “openly place relations with Armenia in the context of the fight against the influence of Russia and Iran.”
