During the annual "Year in Review" press conference, Russian President Vladimir Putin, responding to a question about support for young families, noted the tradition of early marriages in the North Caucasus. He said he believed this was "right" and suggested "following their example," citing Ramzan Kadyrov's large family.
Citizen journalist Rustem Sheykhaliev, sentenced to 14 years, was transferred to the Yeniseisk prison in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. A week before this he spent in a pre-trial detention center in Krasnoyarsk.
Previously, Sheikhaliev could not participate in the hearing to consider the appeal against his sentence via video conferencing from pre-trial detention center No. 3 in Novocherkassk. He suffered severe nosebleeds twice. The first time this happened in a pretrial detention cell, the second time in a cell from where he and other defendants convicted in his case were supposed to participate in the hearing.
According to lawyer Lily Gemedzhi, three days before the meeting, the Crimean Tatar political prisoner suffered from headaches. He took painkillers, but they did not help. Rustem also complained about the lack of medical care. According to him, the administration of the detention center did not respond to requests for an electrocardiogram due to the fact that he suspected heart failure.
In 2022, Sheikhaliev was sentenced to 14 years on charges of terrorist activities and attempting to seize power. He pleaded not guilty and considers his prosecution political, since he criticized the authorities of the Russian Federation and Crimea after the annexation of the peninsula to Russia.
