Opposition figure Gulu Mammadli stated that the arrest of Ali Karimli, leader of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was expected, but the reasons go beyond simple criticism of the authorities. According to Mammadli, Karimli's publications in major Western media have increased his political significance and visibility abroad, which has caused concern among the Azerbaijani authorities.
US Ambassador to Georgia and Prime Minister Exchange Criticism
US Ambassador to Georgia Robin Dunnigan, speaking about the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, oligarch, former Russian citizen Bidzina Ivanishvili, said that he puts his personal financial interests above the interests of the people.
"It is concerning when a person who is known to control the government and the ruling party in this country refuses to meet with international parties and strategic partners because of his misperception of the financial sanctions imposed on him," the ambassador noted.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze called on Robin Dunnigan to pay attention to the activities of her employees. According to him, in the midst of the election campaign in Georgia, banners began appearing on the US Embassy's social media page criticizing the Georgian Dream and its founder Bidzina Ivanishvili.
"I would ask the Ambassador to take a closer look at the activities of her employees who prepare such cards... Cards containing lies," Kobakhidze said.
On October 2, the Georgian opposition TV channel Formula reported that the United States had restricted access to the bank accounts of Ivanishvili's children living abroad. However, the embassy denied this information.
"The US Treasury will publicly disclose all financial sanctions," the diplomatic agency said.
