During the annual "Year in Review" press conference, Russian President Vladimir Putin, responding to a question about support for young families, noted the tradition of early marriages in the North Caucasus. He said he believed this was "right" and suggested "following their example," citing Ramzan Kadyrov's large family.
Chechnya became the center of human rights violations in Russia in 2023. The international non-governmental organization Human Rights Watch made these conclusions in its report.
Thus, human rights activists drew attention to the beating of Nikita Zhuravel, accused of burning the Koran, in a pre-trial detention center in Grozny. The violence was committed by Ramzan Kadyrov's 15-year-old son Adam. Kadyrov Sr. supported his son’s action, after which the teenager was awarded many state awards and titles.
Human Rights Watch also noted that Chechen authorities are forcibly sending residents of the republic to Ukraine to participate in hostilities on the side of the Russian Federation.
Among the examples of the most egregious violations in the republic, the authors pointed to the attack on Novaya Gazeta journalist Elena Milashina and lawyer Alexander Nemov, which occurred on July 4. The victims received multiple injuries, none of the attackers were detained.
The report also mentions the case of Chechen Idris Arsamikov. He disappeared after he was detained in Moscow in February 2023 and transferred to Chechnya. Before this he was tortured. The man's whereabouts are still unknown.
