Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze posed for a photo with several politicians, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a forum in Turkmenistan dedicated to the International Year of Peace and Trust. The Georgian opposition interpreted the presence of representatives of the ruling Georgian Dream party at the event alongside Putin as a decision to reconsider the country's foreign policy.
The Southern District Military Court sentenced Tenali Kanaev to 13.5 years in a strict regime colony. He was found guilty under Art. 317 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (encroachment on the life of military personnel).
According to investigators, on February 29, 2000, Kanaev, as part of a joint armed group led by field commanders Shamil Basayev and Khattab, took part in an attack on servicemen of the 6th company, 104th regiment, 76th Pskov Airborne Division. This happened in the area of Ulus-Kert, Shatoi region of Chechnya. Kanaev fired from a machine gun, as a result, 84 servicemen were killed, four more were injured.
Taking into account the earlier verdict, Kanaev was sentenced to a final sentence of 13 years and 6 months in prison.
