Idris Israilov, a native of Chechnya, has been appointed chairman of the garrison military court in the Russian-controlled part of the Zaporizhzhia region. His appointment was formalized by a decree from Vladimir Putin on October 12, according to the Chechen state news agency Grozny-Inform.
Israilov has been appointed to a six-year term. According to the report, prior to his judicial role, he served as a senior investigator handling high-profile cases. Israilov also holds the academic degree of Candidate of Legal Sciences.
Israilov previously served as a judge at the Rostov-on-Don Garrison Military Court. In September 2023, Putin appointed him deputy chairman of the Russian garrison military court in the Zaporizhzhia region—a move reported at the time by the Center for Investigative Journalism.
Grozny-Inform hailed the new appointment as historic for the republic, emphasizing that "for the first time, a representative of the Chechen people has headed a military court."
Russia announced the annexation of the Zaporizhzhia region on September 30, 2022, following so-called referendums held in the occupied territories. Ukraine and the majority of the world's nations did not recognize the change in the region's status. On October 12 of that year, the UN General Assembly condemned the attempted annexation of the Zaporizhzhia region and three other Ukrainian regions; the resolution was supported by 143 states.
