Rosatom Presents Proposal for New Armenian NPP Unit to Yerevan

Rosatom has proposed building a second power unit at the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) featuring a VVER-1000 reactor. This was announced by Alexey Likhachev, the head of the state corporation.

Likhachev met with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Yerevan. During the meeting, the parties discussed extending the service life of the existing Armenian NPP and the future development of the republic's nuclear energy sector.

According to Likhachev, Rosatom has already submitted a concrete proposal to the Armenian government for the construction of a new 1,000 MW power unit. The head of the state corporation noted that VVER-1000 reactors are in serial operation in Russia and are currently being built in India and Iran. He added that the project incorporates Generation 3+ safety systems and ensures low electricity generation costs.

Likhachev had previously stated that Rosatom is prepared to extend the operation of the Armenian NPP's existing power unit until 2046.

Pashinyan has not yet approved the new project. The Armenian government is reviewing proposals from various international partners and has stated that a decision will be made in the foreseeable future, taking into account cost, quality, safety, timelines, and guarantees.
