Georgian leadership hopes to join NATO

Georgia expects clear recommendations and decisions from NATO on its path to joining the bloc. The country has long demonstrated itself as a member of the alliance through its actions and contributions to security issues. This was stated by the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili at a meeting of the NATO-Georgia Commission in Belgium.

According to Papuashvili, the Georgian military contingent participated in the missions together with NATO member countries. Therefore, Tbilisi has long been ready for the alliance to make a political decision.

The speaker of the Georgian parliament added that in terms of the level of development of democratic institutions, Georgia meets the standards of the bloc. “If we compare our democratic institutions with those of NATO countries, we will become a member by the appropriate standard,” he said.

The Speaker of Parliament also shared his expectations for the upcoming NATO summit in Washington in 2024: “It is important for us that at the Washington summit there is clear support for the issue of Georgia’s accession and assistance to it.

In addition to joining the North Atlantic Alliance, Georgia is waiting for admission to the European Union. On November 8, the European Commission released a report on enlargement for 2023, which contained recommendations to grant candidate status to Georgia.”
