Investigator in Anna Politkovskaya murder case promoted

Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded the rank of Major General of Justice to Vladimir Sharaev. In 2015, he was an investigator in the case of the murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya.

Recently, a court in Grozny approved a request for parole (parole) of Dzhabrail Makhmudov. In 2014, they, along with their brother Ibrahim, were found guilty of complicity in the murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya. They were sentenced to 12 and 14 years in a maximum security colony, respectively.

In the summer of 2022, Makhmudov’s remaining sentence was replaced with 3 years and 5 months of forced labor. The court approved the convict's request for parole, despite dozens of penalties in pre-trial detention centers and colonies and three punishments in the form of placement in a punishment cell.

On October 7, 2006, Anna Politkovskaya, a Russian journalist and human rights activist, was killed in the elevator of her house in Moscow. She became famous for her materials on the topic of the second Russian-Chechen war, writing about murders, torture and abductions in the North Caucasus.

Politkovskaya conducted investigations into corruption in the Ministry of Defense and the command of the United Group of Federal Forces in Chechnya. Since 2003, she has accused the Chechen leadership of kidnappings, extortion and other crimes. Anna Politkovskaya harshly criticized the Russian authorities and President Vladimir Putin.
