The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has published a report alleging that Georgian authorities used chemical weapons during the suppression of pro-European protests in Tbilisi in 2024. The chemical weapon in question is bromobenzyl cyanide, a chemical warfare agent dating back to World War I, also known as "kamit."
The Minister of Justice of Georgia received an official demarche from the EU in connection with the state of health of the arrested ex-president Mikhail Saakashvili. This was stated by EU Ambassador to Georgia Pavel Gerchinsky.
"We presented the EU’s position, which was accepted by the 27 member states. The Minister of Justice provided us with information on what the Georgian Government is doing to protect the rights of former President Mikhail Saakashvili as an accused and a prisoner," Gerchinsky said.
According to doctors, due to a sharp drop in weight (50 kg in six months), Saakashvili begins irreversible effects in the organs, muscle and bone are destroyed. Further weight loss will lead to death. The main problem is the extremely negligent attitude of doctors and the lack of necessary assistance.
In turn, Georgian Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Gia Volsky said that Saakashvili is guilty and is serving a deserved punishment, and the EU demarche contains elements of injustice. " It would be good for the EU countries to appeal to Saakashvili’s entourage to abandon the strategy of holding him hostage and to speculate on his health," said Volsky.
