Azerbaijan Press Council Accuses Russian Media of Threats and Insults

The Azerbaijan Press Council has condemned reports in certain Russian media outlets that, according to the organization, contain insults and threats directed at the country, its citizens, its leadership, and prominent public figures.

The Council’s statement notes that such material has appeared in the Russian media landscape before and has now become a recurring pattern. The organization maintains that this type of rhetoric violates journalistic ethics and the principles of professional media conduct.

The Press Council also linked these publications to the broader relationship between the two nations. It argues that such material runs counter to the spirit of Azerbaijani-Russian relations and could damage ties between the two countries' journalistic communities. At the same time, the organization emphasized that Azerbaijani media outlets traditionally strive to uphold professional standards when covering events in neighboring countries, including Russia.

Russian journalists and the general public were urged to respond to these publications, which the Council believes are intended to sour relations between the two peoples and undermine media ties.

Separately, the organization stated that the regular appearance of such material—against the backdrop of strict control over the Russian media landscape—could create the impression that this rhetoric is effectively sanctioned at the state level. The Council reminded the authors of these threats and offensive reports of the potential for legal consequences.
