The European Union Special Representative for Human Rights, Kaisa Ollongren, expressed concern about the severe restrictions on media freedom in Azerbaijan. During a meeting with Azerbaijani journalists abroad, she learned that independent journalism is virtually impossible within the country.
Media representatives reported detentions and arrests on trumped-up smuggling charges, as well as harsh conditions in detention, including a lack of hygiene supplies, food, and medical care. Kaisa Ollongren stated that the erosion of press independence and repression are deeply concerning. She noted that free and independent media are the cornerstone of any democratic society and emphasized the need for the Azerbaijani authorities to create a safer and freer environment for journalists.
Ollongren cited the recent case of Abzas Media employees receiving lengthy prison sentences for their professional work exposing corruption. Journalists from media outlets such as Meydan TV, Toplum TV, and Kanal-13 are also facing persecution.
