MMA athlete from Chechnya detained in Indonesia on suspicion of extortion
MMA fighter Khasan Askhabov was detained at the airport on the Indonesian resort island of Bali while attempting to fly to the UAE. The Chechen native is suspected of kidnapping a Ukrainian citizen and extorting 3.2 billion rupees ($200,000).
 
According to Indonesian police, in addition to Askhabov, there are 9 more suspected Russian citizens in the case. Previously, he and his twin brother were detained in Thailand on suspicion of involvement in a similar crime. In the fall of 2023, several men broke into the villa of an Italian businessman and tortured him all night. They stole 40 thousand euros and various things. The total damage exceeded 300 thousand euros. According to Thai law enforcement, several citizens of Kazakhstan and the Askhabov brothers were involved in the attack. However, the latter then managed to leave for Bali.

The 2026 World Press Freedom Index, published this morning by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), records the worst deterioration in global media freedom in 25 years.
