The US and the EU will impose new sanctions against the Georgian authorities
The US may impose new sanctions against Georgia, said State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.

"We are deeply concerned about the situation with Georgian democracy. The steps that the Georgian Dream party has taken to undermine democracy. We are preparing additional measures that will be announced in the coming weeks," Miller said.

Earlier, the US has already imposed visa restrictions on 20 Georgian politicians and officials, and suspended strategic partnership.

In addition, the EU has reached an agreement on the need to suspend the visa-free regime for holders of Georgian diplomatic passports. This was reported by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas. She also commented on the issue of sanctions against representatives of the Georgian authorities. According to her, this requires the consent of 27 EU member states, but so far Hungary and Slovakia have refused.

The day before, the OSCE PA Human Rights Committee called on the Georgian authorities to stop persecuting opponents. The statement said that human rights activists are deeply concerned about the situation in the country, where cases of violence against citizens exercising their fundamental rights have become more frequent.
