The US has warned Georgia of new sanctions

The US may impose new sanctions against Georgia in an attempt to change its course. This was announced by Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs James O'Brien.

He also noted that Washington advises Georgia to prevent China from building the Anaklia port. This is one of the conditions for returning to the Euro-Atlantic path.

"The ruling party of Georgia must be clear that there is a way back. Free and fair elections must take place without violence against civil society. Any transparency law must be brought into line with EU law, not Russian law. And prevent China from building the Anaklia deep-water port. These steps are really important for Georgia today," James O'Brien said at a hearing in the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.

Tbilisi's relations with the US and the EU have deteriorated against the backdrop of the adoption of the law on foreign agents by the Georgian parliament in May 2024. The US State Department previously announced that it was imposing visa sanctions on dozens of Georgian citizens in connection with the adopted law.
