Three Natives of the North Caucasus Federal District Detained as Members of Basayev's Detachment
Security forces detained three men in Dagestan, Karachay-Cherkessia and the Volgograd Region - a native of Chechnya Adam Magamadov, Samael Batayev from Dagestan and Rustam Chagilov from Stavropol. In the near future, they will be charged under Article 279, Part 2 of Article 209, Article 317 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (armed rebellion, participation in a gang and attempt on the life of a law enforcement officer).

According to investigators, the defendants joined a detachment led by field commanders Shamil Basayev and Emir Khattab. On February 29, 2000, in the area of the village of Ulus-Kert in the Shatoi district of Chechnya, they carried out an armed attack on the 104th regiment of the 76th Pskov division of the Airborne Troops, during which 84 servicemen were killed.

According to the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, 44 participants in the attack were previously identified, 29 of them were convicted. Five people were put on the wanted list, two were killed during the capture.

As human rights activists from Memorial noted earlier, the "template" testimonies of relatives of Russian soldiers as witnesses are presented in almost all criminal cases that were opened against natives of Chechnya. Witnesses most often repeat the official version in a carbon copy.
