In Dagestan, a schoolgirl pulled a six-year-old boy from a car just seconds before it burst into flames

In Khasavyurt, 15-year-old Maryam Akavova rescued a six-year-old child from a Lada Priora that had caught fire. On October 27, the ninth-grade student was walking past a parked car when she noticed a boy’s head sticking out of a window. Upon getting closer, she saw that the glove compartment inside the vehicle was already on fire.

Maryam pulled the child out through the window and moved him a safe distance away from the car. She then asked a passerby to call emergency services. According to the schoolgirl, the fire began to spread more rapidly just seconds after she had pulled the boy out; shortly thereafter, the entire vehicle went up in flames.

The rescued boy has developmental needs and, according to the prosecutor's office, had been left in the car without adult supervision. The office has launched an investigation to establish the circumstances of the incident and to assess how the parents were fulfilling their responsibilities regarding the upbringing and care of their son.

Maryam is a ninth-grade student at School No. 5 in Khasavyurt. The city’s mayor, Korgoli Korgoliev, expressed his gratitude for her actions and stated that he intends to meet with her personally to recognize her bravery.
