The "militants" killed in Makhachkala became defendants in a criminal case on terrorism
A criminal case on the creation of a terrorist group and participation in it has been opened in Dagestan. The defendants are four residents of the republic, killed last week in a shootout with security forces in Makhachkala. Another defendant was sent to custody. The names of all five defendants are unknown.

According to investigators, in the summer of 2024, two men "united into a stable group for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities." In the fall, the group was allegedly replenished with three more people. A criminal case on terrorism was opened six days after the murder of the defendants.

On March 5, four men declared "militants" were killed during a counter-terrorism operation in Dagestan. According to security forces, they were planning a terrorist attack on a facility of the regional Ministry of Internal Affairs in Kaspiysk. While attempting to detain them, the attackers opened fire on traffic police officers. The violators were blocked on the outskirts of the village of Semender in the Kirovsky district of Makhachkala, where a counter-terrorist operation (CTO) regime had previously been conducted.

According to the National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAC), the gang's activities were coordinated by the banned terrorist organization Islamic State. It was reported that there were no casualties among the civilian population or personnel.

"Grenade launchers, improvised explosive devices, grenades, machine guns, a pistol and ammunition for them were found at the site of the clash and in a nearby cache," the NAC statement said.

The 2026 World Press Freedom Index, published this morning by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), records the worst deterioration in global media freedom in 25 years. More than half of the world's countries rank the situation as "challenging" or "very challenging," and the average index level has never been lower. A key trend is increasing legal pressure on the media: of the five indicators used to assess press freedom worldwide (economy, law, security, politics, culture, and society), the "law" indicator showed the most significant decline.
