Participants of riots at Makhachkala airport want to be tried in Krasnodar

The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation received a petition from the Prosecutor General's Office to transfer to the court of the Krasnodar Territory the criminal case of five residents of Dagestan accused of participating in riots at the Makhachkala airport. The petition states that the accused have extensive connections in the law enforcement bloc and the judiciary of Dagestan and can put pressure on the participants in the trial.

At the same time, the defense believes that a change in jurisdiction may threaten that criminal cases will not be considered with all objectivity, and the sentences will be unreasonably harsh. The position of the prosecutor's office was also criticized by the deputy chairman of the Public Monitoring Commission (POC) of Dagestan, Shamil Khadulaev.

“If Dagestanis are tried in another region, they will get the full punishment, and there is no doubt about it. But the question is, why is such a practice necessary - moving the court to another region, inventing stories about “security”? They shout from every voice that Dagestan is a territory of peace and tranquility, but when it comes to the court, Dagestan becomes “soooooo dangerous,” Khadulaev wrote in his Telegram channel.

In total, more than 130 people are in pre-trial detention center on criminal charges. Most of them are charged with participation in mass riots (Part 2 of Article 212 of the Criminal Code). Also, the courts received over 800 protocols under articles on violation of the rules for holding rallies and organizing the simultaneous presence of citizens (20.2 and 20.2.2 of the Administrative Code).

Let us recall that on October 29, 2023, residents of Dagestan burst into the Makhachkala airport demanding that passengers on a flight from Tel Aviv not be allowed into the city. The action took place within the framework of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
