A journalist was arrested in Azerbaijan after his criticism of the country's authorities

The court in Baku issued a decision to put the founder of the website Az24saat.org Vugar Gurdganly (Alekperov) in custody for 1 month and 12 days. He was accused of fraud.

According to the investigation, Gurdganly, making various promises to citizens and abusing their trust, fraudulently took possession of more than 100 thousand manats. Lawyer Mehman Muradly believes that these accusations are unfounded.

The Az24saat.org website was blocked by the Baku court in 2018 based on a complaint by the Electronic Security Service of the Ministry of Communications. After that, Gurdganly published materials on social networks with sharp criticism of the government of Azerbaijan.

The total number of political prisoners in Azerbaijan is almost 300 people.
