Opposition figure Gulu Mammadli stated that the arrest of Ali Karimli, leader of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was expected, but the reasons go beyond simple criticism of the authorities. According to Mammadli, Karimli's publications in major Western media have increased his political significance and visibility abroad, which has caused concern among the Azerbaijani authorities.
Four presidential candidates have emerged in Azerbaijan
The day before, the chairman of the Great Azerbaijan Party, Elshad Musayev, nominated his candidacy for the country's upcoming presidential elections. Earlier, similar statements were made by the chairman of the board of the Center for Social Research, member of the Azerbaijani parliament Zahid Oruj and the head of the Great Meeting party and the parliamentary culture committee Fazil Mustafa.
The opposition parties Popular Front Party and Musavat refused to nominate their candidates. The ruling “New Azerbaijan” was the first to nominate its candidate - the current President Ilham Aliyev.
On February 7, 2024, early presidential elections will be held in Azerbaijan. Aliyev signed the corresponding order.
