In Azerbaijan, an opposition figure lamented the economic downturn amid growth in neighboring countries

Ali Karimli, Chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), offered a critical assessment of the current economic situation in Azerbaijan. Citing official data, he stated that in the first quarter of 2026, economic growth in Georgia was 8.4%, while in Armenia it was 7.4%. In contrast, Azerbaijan's economy showed negative dynamics, contracting by 0.3%.

According to Karimli, these figures indicate the country's development is on the wrong track. He blamed the economic difficulties on corruption, lawlessness, and the ruling family's monopolization of the economy. The PFPA leader emphasized that true economic prosperity and social well-being in Azerbaijan can only be achieved in a free, democratic, and competitive market economy, and called for the creation of a state based on the rule of law.

Ali Kerimli has been under arrest since late 2025 in a case related to former head of the Presidential Administration Ramiz Mehdiyev. He is accused of attempting a coup d'état, but he denies the charges as fabricated and politically motivated. The Popular Front Party (PFPA) denies any "Russian connection" or involvement in the coup, declaring its commitment to European integration and peaceful methods.
