Opposition party activist sentenced to 13 years in prison in Azerbaijan goes on hunger strike
An activist of the opposition Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFA) Niyameddin Akhmedov went on a hunger strike in prison. The man was initially placed in solitary confinement for publicizing the torture and suicide of another prisoner. Then, in protest, he went on a hunger strike, the party reported.

Niyameddin Akhmedov is a former bodyguard of PFA leader Ali Karimli. In April 2020, he was arrested on charges of violating the quarantine regime. He was later charged with financing terrorism and calling for action against the state. According to the defense, Akhmedov was forced to testify against Ali Karimli and was promised to remain a witness, but he refused.

The court sentenced Akhmedov to 13 years in prison. He rejected the charges against him. Human rights activists recognized the man as a political prisoner.
