Azerbaijan marks 35th anniversary of Soviet invasion that resulted in loss of life
On January 20, 1990, a tragedy occurred in Azerbaijan that went down in history as "Bloody January". Soviet troops entered Baku to suppress protests by the civilian population. As a result of the armed aggression, 147 people were killed and 744 were injured.
Despite the introduction of a state of emergency in Baku and other regions of Azerbaijan, on January 22, 1990, in connection with the burial of the martyrs, the people held a mourning procession that gathered more than a million people.
In February 1994, at a special session of the parliament in Baku, the tragic events of January 20 were recognized as an act of military aggression and a crime. In March of the same year, a resolution was adopted "On the tragic events committed in Baku on January 20, 1990", as a result of which this day was declared the National Day of Mourning. None of the leaders of the former USSR and the Azerbaijan SSR were held responsible for the January tragedy.
