In Azerbaijan, police stopped a rally against “uncontested presidential elections”

In Baku, the police stopped an uncoordinated protest action announced under the slogan “No to fake elections!” It was announced the day before by a political emigrant in Europe, activist Tural Sadygly.

Police also asked senior member of the Azerbaijan Democracy and Welfare Party Anvar Agamaliyev and Tarana Safarsoy, the wife of jailed activist Rza Safarsoy, to disperse.

On February 7, 2024, early presidential elections will be held in Azerbaijan. The corresponding order was signed by Ilham Aliyev. He has been in power since 2003. Moreover, elections were supposed to take place in 2025. The purpose of suddenly calling early elections is to prolong Aliyev's power, opposition politicians say.
