The number of political prisoners has increased in Azerbaijan

The total number of political prisoners in Azerbaijan has reached 288 people. This is 43 more people than at the end of 2023, the Freedom Union of Political Prisoners of Azerbaijan reported.

Thus, 9 political prisoners were added in the categories “Journalists and bloggers” and “Members of parties and public organizations.” Another 25 new members of the list are included in the “religious” category.
In general, political prisoners were divided into the following groups: “journalists and bloggers” – 20 people; “human rights activists” – 2; “members of opposition parties and movements” – 22; “political immigrants deported from Germany” – 5; “religious” – 208; “convicted in the Tatar case” – 7; “convicted in the Ganja case” – 13; “convicts for life” – 11.

In Azerbaijan, at the end of last year and the beginning of this year, independent media workers were subjected to mass arrests. These are Teymur Kerimov (YouTube channel “Channel 11”), Ibrahim Gumbatov (website Azerinfo.az), Arshad Ibragimov (website Dunyaninsesi.az), Hafiz Babali (Turan agency), Shamo Eminov (Internet television “Channel 13” ), Elnara Gasimova (Abzas Media), Arzu Sayadoglu (Mammadov) (YouTube channel “Arzu Sayadoglu”), Alasker Mammadli (founder of Toplum TV), Mushfik Jabbarov (Toplum TV).
