Another journalist detained in Azerbaijan

The head of Internet television “Channel 13” Aziz Orujov was detained by the Baku police under Article 188.2 of the Criminal Code (violation of the right of ownership, use or lease) for unauthorized construction. According to the lawyer, Orudzhev did not accept the accusation and stated that it was aimed at restricting journalistic activity.

Before the arrest, the police searched the house and office of Aziz Orujov. In 2017, he was arrested on charges of illegal business and sentenced to 6 years in prison. A year later, the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan decided to release the prisoner.

Earlier, Azerbaijani authorities arrested Ulvi Hasanli, Sevinj Vagifgyzy and Magomed Kekalov on charges of illegal import of currency. Hasanli and Vagifgyzy headed Abzas Media, one of the few independent publications remaining in the country, which published investigations into the business of the president’s family and his subordinates.
