One of the participants in the murder of Anna Politkovskaya was released early in Chechnya

The court in Grozny approved the request for parole of Dzhabrail Makhmudov. In 2014, he and his brother Ibrahim were found guilty of complicity in the murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya. They were sentenced to 12 and 14 years in a maximum security colony, respectively.

In the summer of 2022, Makhmudov’s remaining sentence was replaced with forced labor for a period of 3 years and 5 months. The court approved the convict's request for parole, despite dozens of penalties in pre-trial detention centers and colonies and three punishments in the form of placement in a punishment cell.

On October 7, 2006, Russian journalist and human rights activist Anna Politkovskaya was killed in the elevator of her Moscow building. She gained fame thanks to her materials on the topic of the second Russian-Chechen war, writing about murders, torture and abductions in the North Caucasus.

Politkovskaya conducted investigations into corruption in the Ministry of Defense and the command of the United Group of Federal Forces in Chechnya. Since 2003, she has accused the Chechen leadership of kidnappings, extortion and other crimes. Anna Politkovskaya harshly criticized the Russian authorities and President Vladimir Putin.
