A section of the Kavkaz Highway in Chechnya has been closed due to a mudflow.

Heavy rains in Chechnya have caused a mudflow and traffic restrictions in the republic's mountainous regions. In the Itum-Kalinsky District, a section of the federal highway R-217 "Kavkaz" near the village of Kokadoy has been temporarily closed.

The head of the district, Albert Rabuyev, reported the mudflow. He said a stream of soil and rocks had flowed onto the roadway, forcing traffic to be stopped. Special equipment and road crews were deployed to clear the road.

Local authorities have urged drivers to avoid traveling in this direction until the aftermath of the storm has cleared. Traffic is expected to reopen after the clearing is completed and the road condition is assessed.

Earlier, the Chechen Ministry of Emergency Situations warned of adverse weather conditions from May 20 to 23. Heavy rains, thunderstorms, hail, and winds with gusts up to 25 meters per second were predicted for the region. Rescuers also warned of possible rising river levels and the risk of mudslides in mountainous areas.

As we previously reported, prolonged rainfall caused flooding in several districts of Chechnya. In Alkhan-Yurt, water entered the property of five homes. Authorities in Shali and several mountainous districts of the republic also reported damage to homes and roads.
