The wearing of niqabs has been temporarily banned in Dagestan

The Muftiate of Dagestan announced a temporary ban on wearing niqabs. This was stated by the Deputy Mufti of the Republic Abdulla Salimov.

“The Mufti, referring to the appeal from the Ministry of National Policy and Religious Affairs, which reports the existing security threat to the population of the republic, and on the basis of the competent conclusion of the department of fatwas issued yesterday, announces a temporary ban on wearing niqabs until the identified threats are eliminated and a new theological conclusion.” , said Salimov.

The day before it was reported that the department of fatwas of the Muftiate of Dagestan did not find sufficient grounds for a general ban on wearing niqabs. It was noted that in some cases a temporary ban may be introduced “in order to ensure public safety.”

“It is worth noting that in certain situations, for security reasons, a local ban on wearing the niqab may be introduced, since the safety of society is of paramount importance in Islam. However, this ban should be dictated solely by external factors and be temporary. There are enough examples of such practices in Islam,” said the telegram channel of the Dagestan muftiate.

On July 1, the chief mufti of Dagestan, Akhmed-haji Abdulaev, announced that the republic’s muftiate was preparing a religious decision (fatwa) to ban the niqab.
