Elena Patyaeva—a friend of Seda Suleymanova, who disappeared three years ago after being forcibly returned from St. Petersburg to Chechnya—was detained in Grozny. On August 23, Patyaeva stood by the monument to journalists who died for freedom of speech, holding a sign that read: "I demand an investigation into the murder of Seda Suleymanova." This was reported by the human rights project "Slovo Zashchite" (Word for the Defense).
Suspected squad member Shamil Basayev was detained in Dagestan
In Dagestan, security forces detained a former member of the detachment of Chechen field commanders Shamil Basayev and Khattab. Ibragim Magomedov is accused of participating in an attack on the Novolaksky region of Dagestan in 1999 during the second Russian-Chechen war.
Magomedov was detained in the village of Novosasitli, Khasavyurt district. He is charged under the articles “banditry”, “armed rebellion”, “attack on the life of a law enforcement officer” of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. According to the investigation, during the invasion of the Novolaksky district, 99 people were killed and 238 military and law enforcement officers were injured.
