A rally in support of the arrested Azerbaijani journalist was held in Georgia

A rally in support of journalist Afgan Sadigov was held near the Azerbaijani embassy in Tbilisi. He has been under arrest in Georgia since August and faces extradition to his homeland. Participants held posters reading “Ilham Aliyev is a dictator.”

Afgan Sadigov, despite his grave condition, continues to go on hunger strike in a prison hospital. He also refuses medical care, his wife reported.

Afgan Sadigov, founder and editor-in-chief of the opposition Azerbaijani channel Azel TV, was arrested in Tbilisi on August 3 on the basis of a fabricated Interpol wanted list at the request of the Azerbaijani authorities. In May 2020, he was sentenced in Azerbaijan to seven years on charges of extortion. Human rights activists called the criminal case fabricated.

Sadigov was pardoned in May 2023, but continued to face threats from the authorities and left his homeland. He is known for his criticism of President Ilham Aliyev and his entourage.
