Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze posed for a photo with several politicians, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a forum in Turkmenistan dedicated to the International Year of Peace and Trust. The Georgian opposition interpreted the presence of representatives of the ruling Georgian Dream party at the event alongside Putin as a decision to reconsider the country's foreign policy.
Georgia records record number of prisoners
As of August 1, 10,419 people were serving sentences in Georgian prisons. This is according to the National Statistics Service of Georgia "Sakstat". This number has broken the record of 2014, which was 10,372 people.
It is noted that Georgian prisons are 84.5% full. The majority of convicts are people aged 31 to 49. However, among those serving sentences, there are 52 minors and 64 people over 70 years old. For 4.1 thousand prisoners, this is their second or more terms.
About 1.9 thousand people are awaiting sentencing. In the fall, Georgia plans to grant an amnesty for prisoners, after which their number will decrease by about a third.
