Azerbaijani authorities to pay compensation for political persecution after ECtHR intervention

The European Court of Human Rights motivated the Azerbaijani authorities to pay compensation to victims of political restrictions and persecution.

Thus, Azad Hasanov and Abulfaz Sadigov complained of unfounded criminal prosecution because they were members of the Musavat opposition party. Thanks to the decision of the ECtHR, the Azerbaijani government undertook to pay each of them 3,500 euros to compensate for moral damage.

In another case, the applicants Ramin Akhmedli, Bashir Tarverdiev, Nurlan Gahramanli and Khanov Musaev complained about the violation of their rights in relation to the interference of the authorities during the protest actions. Under the terms of the settlement agreement, the government agreed to pay them between 2,850 and 3,900 euros.

In the case of Imran Aliyev v. Azerbaijan, the first complained about the unlawful restriction of his freedom of movement, and in particular the imposition of a ban on leaving the country. The parties reached an amicable agreement, and Aliyev will receive 1,500 euros as compensation.
